Great Britain's national geological survey

Great Britain's national geological survey (there is a separate Geological Survey of Northern Ireland) was established in 1835 as the Geological Survey of Great Britain, renamed in 1965 as the Institute of Geological Sciences, and renamed again in 1984 as the British Geological Survey. Applied, economic and environmental geology have always been important parts of the Survey's work.

The Survey has published very large numbers of geological maps, serial publications under a variety of titles, other materials, and what are known as Memoirs. Although first published, in the 1830s, as a numbered serial publication containing a variety of papers in each volume, from about Volume IV this practice was abandoned, and the Survey has used the term Memoir, ever since, as a general overall title for its mainstream stand-alone publications and for some series. The best-known are the One-inch Sheet Memoirs, each descriptive of the geology of a single published one inch to one mile geological map. However, many other memoirs, containing much of specific local interest, have also been published, including economic geology memoirs, water supply memoirs, and memoirs relating to specific geological periods such as the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. These are less well known resources for local studies than they should be.

Particularly important for the Croydon area are The Cretaceous Rocks of Britain, and the various water supply memoirs, and Woodward's memoir on soils and subsoils.

Most of the Survey's Memoirs contain much of local history and archaeological interest, apart from pure geology. No archaeological or local history study of settlement, urban or rural land use, industry, water supply, or public health can be considered complete without reference to them.

The Society's membership has included several of the Memoirs' authors, the most important of them being William Whitaker FRS (1836-1925), sometime Croydon resident and President of this Society.

The Memoirs currently held in the Society's library are listed below. There is a comparable volume of other Survey publications, to be listed at some future date. The Society's holdings, which include most of the most important volumes for Kent, London, Surrey and Sussex, tend to cover most of south-eastern England and further afield where the Chalk and later rocks outcrop, with more limited coverage of the Jurassic rocks.

I.   The One-inch Sheet Memoirs

There have been two series of one-inch geological maps, with differing sheet numbers. Two-digit sheet numbers in the following list refer to the Old Series maps and Memoirs. Three-digit numbers refer to the New Series. In a few cases, a revised and updated sheet Memoir has been issued.

From the 1980s onwards, Memoirs have been published with a larger page size (220 x 276 mm) than previously (150 x 240 mm). In the Table below the titles in the new larger format are marked with '†' and those which will be sent off for binding at some point are marked '**'.
